Alatriste

Capítulo Diez: pp. 173-189

In this chapter, Íñigo begins to realize that something may not be as it seems with Angélica de Alquézar, but the young Íñigo is powerless to stop himself from pursuing her. He is excited to attend his first Lope play after his recent introduction to the great playwright, and tells her of his plans to accompany Alatriste to the event that very night.

It is at the end of the play that the attack on Alatriste, that he has anticipated for some time, finally arrives. In the corral of the theater, he is assaulted by five ruffians, all the while observed by none others than the King, the Prince of Wales, and the Duke of Buckingham. And finally, the assault takes a very surprising turn!

Antes de leer

  1. Think back to what you know about male/female relationships at the time in which the novel takes place. Do you think that Íñigo would be allowed, under normal circumstances, to engage Angélica in conversation?
  2. What does this access imply?
  3. In a world without technology, television, Internet, radio or computers, entertainment was found largely in the theater. Today, attending a theater performance is considered “high brow”. But during Alatriste’s time, it was the most beloved form of entertainment for all classes.
  4. Honor and duty, and debts of honor were central to many interactions at the time. Witness that willingness of Quevedo to fight alongside Alatriste (and vice versa) even though their particular battles were unrelated. This sense of honor and duty to repay debts ran throughout society, from the street urchins through the noble families.
